Quick answer: this AI readiness assessment is ten questions about your data, your people, your tools and your goals. Pick one answer for each and you get a score out of 20 and a plain next step. It takes about five minutes, assumes you have no IT department, and stores nothing.

Take the AI readiness assessment

2. Can you name the one business problem you want AI to help solve?
3. Is the work you want to improve done the same way each time?
4. Is the information that work needs easy to get to?
5. Is that information accurate and protected?
6. Do your people have clear rules on AI tools and customer information?
7. Do your people have the skills and confidence to use AI tools and check what they produce?
8. Can you measure today how long this work takes and what it costs?
9. Does one named person own the result, and can that person decide?
10. Do you have time and budget to test, fix and adjust, not just to switch something on?

What do the ten questions check?

AreaWhy it matters
Where you are today (question 1)AI is often already in your software and in your team. You cannot manage what you have not seen.
A defined problem (questions 2 and 3)A repeated, describable task is something you can improve and check. A vague wish is not.
Your data (questions 4 and 5)If the information is scattered or wrong, automation will repeat the mess faster.
Rules and skills (questions 6 and 7)People need to know which tools are allowed, what never goes in, and when a human decides.
Measurement, ownership and time (questions 8 to 10)Without a baseline, an owner and time to adjust, you cannot tell whether it worked.

What does your score mean?

ScoreWhat it suggests
0 to 7Start with one problem, not a tool. Write down one task and measure it.
8 to 14Ready for one small pilot, once you fix your two lowest-scoring areas.
15 to 20Ready to audit and build. Rank your opportunities by payback.

The score bands are ours. They are a conversation starter, not a validated benchmark.

What should you do next, whatever your score?

  • check_circlePick one repeated task. Not five.
  • check_circleTime it for one week and write down the steps.
  • check_circleName one person who owns the result.
  • check_circleCheck where the information for that task lives, and who can see it.
  • check_circleWrite two rules for AI use: which tools are allowed, and what never gets pasted in.

If you would like help choosing the task, an AI audit ranks your opportunities by payback and ends in a written plan. You can see what an AI audit costs before you decide, and book a free 15-minute call if you want a straight answer on whether it fits.

Where do these questions come from, and what are their limits?

Seven of the ten questions follow six that InterTradeIreland published for small and mid-sized businesses in seven AI readiness questions every SME should ask: using AI already, a defined problem, skills, data that is accurate, accessible and secure, guidance on responsible use, and measurement. The other three are ours: repeatable work, a named owner, and time to test.

This is a self-check. The scoring is our own and has not been validated against outcomes. It cannot see your real workflows, which is what an audit is for.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI readiness assessment?

An AI readiness assessment is a short review of whether a business has the groundwork for AI to help: a defined problem, repeatable work, usable data, simple rules, people who can use the tools, a way to measure results, an owner and time to test.

Does this assessment store or send my answers?

No. Your answers stay in your browser while the page is open. Nothing is stored or sent, and there is no email gate.

What score do I need to start using AI?

There is no pass mark. The score shows where the gaps are. A low score means fix the groundwork first, not that AI is not for you.

Is this the same as an AI audit?

No. This is a ten-question self-check you take alone in five minutes. An AI audit is a fixed-price engagement that maps your real workflows and ends in a written plan.

Who is this assessment for?

Owners and managers of small and mid-sized businesses with no IT department. It assumes you have people doing repeated work and needs no technical background.
